Mosquée Ben Youssef review: our verdict
Rue Assouel, right in the heart of the medina, the Ben Youssef Mosque has given its name to an entire quarter: the adjacent medersa, the square, and the surrounding souks. Its minaret, standing about 40 meters high, serves as a landmark when you get lost in the alleyways of the area, just a few steps from the Maison de la Photographie.
Always an active place of worship, the mosque is best appreciated from the outside. Most visitors pass through the neighboring medersa, accessible with a 50 dirham ticket: from its less-frequented upper floor, you enjoy a beautiful elevated view of the building. It's the logical stop for a morning of architecture and history, for photography enthusiasts and simple curious explorers of old Marrakech alike.
Keep in mind: the prayer hall remains reserved for worshippers, and the area is very busy during the day, including photo sessions. Arrive early to enjoy the details without the crowds: the neighborhood reveals itself much better in the cool morning air.
