Dunes & Désert review: our verdict
The distinguishing feature here is how the animals are treated: the Dromedaries of Dunes & Désert are led gently, in a small-scale camp, in peace, far from chain caravans. Since 2007, the agency has operated from a ten-hectare oasis in the Agafay desert; from there depart quad, buggy, mountain bike, and trekking, and one can even go as far as hot air ballooning or kayaking on Lake Lalla Takerkoust.
The most requested outing combines an hour on camelback at sunset with a dinner under the tent. Those who love mechanics take the buggy or the quad, with a pilot-guide and a photographer who follows the outing; one can also extend it with a night under the tent, including the pool. Couples, families, groups of friends, beginners: everyone finds their formula. Not for those who want to return to the city in twenty minutes: from the medina, the shuttle takes nearly an hour.
The best time slot: set off in the late afternoon, to be on horseback when the sun sets over the Agafay. The pitfall: forgetting that the photographer's photos are paid for separately. The good tip: the shuttle that comes to pick you up at your riad or hotel, ideal when you don't have a car.
