La Baguette du Relais review: our verdict
The concept revolves around a sandwich: a baguette filled with entrecôte and topped with green sauce, the very thing that draws the curious and lengthens the queue. The menu has expanded to include burgers, rather well-constructed on good bread, and a few salads, including a Caesar, but it is the baguette that carries the name and reputation of the house.
The promise is strong, but the execution is more uneven: meat sometimes overcooked, sauce that doesn't always live up to its reputation, portions that leave you hungry for the price asked. On rush days, you wait a long time just to get a table, and the kitchen then struggles to keep up. Worth trying for lovers of entrecôte sandwiches who want to form their own opinion; not for a big appetite on a tight budget, nor for a rushed lunch between meetings.
Dish to order: the entrecôte baguette, the reason for the address. The trap: staying in the queue on a busy day, that's where the cooking and sauce slip up. The good slot: outside peak hours, the house serves every day from noon until midnight.
