La Kamounya review: our verdict
Kamoun means cumin, and this spice sets the tone for a house that revisits Moroccan classics, often without meat: Marrakech-style harira, vegetable tagines, a pastilla that keeps its sweet-savory balance without the meat, and salads elevated with herbs and nuts. All of this is enjoyed perched on a roof of the Kasbah, just near Bab Agnaou, facing the minarets, the flat roofs of the medina, and the storks settled in their nests.
The dishes arrive carefully arranged, service is quick and friendly, and the space between tables allows conversation without raising your voice. On the drinks side, crafted mocktails accompany the end of the day. The venue suits a lunch break in the middle of a day of sightseeing or an evening tête-à-tête away from the noise of the souks; even a small group can book the roof for themselves. Strict vegans, however, must read the menu closely: not everything is plant-based, and gambas are listed.
The good tip: a house-made mocktail at sunset, when the medina lights up below. The best time slot: evening, by reservation, to secure a table right on the edge of the roof.
